Back to normal

All children are healthy and active. Aaron started eating again yesterday and he's really perked up (and earned his fair share of timeouts in exchange LOL).

Monday: Parent Teacher Conferences. Ozzie's doing fine. His teacher is delightful. He's not the brightest in the class but he's not a slouch either. He's perfectly normal...

Tuesday: Nolan's preschool went to the fire station. Those fire fighters really do a good job for Mrs. McG's preschool students. Nolan learned a lot and is sharing his knowledge with his brothers.

Wednesday: Aaron REALLY perked up today. He and Nolan participated fully in music class... so much so that we came home, picked up Daddy (who had federal holiday today), and went to Ming Hing, our favorite Chinese buffet.

Thursday: Nolan took HAIR (his black wig) for Letter H. Soo funny. I had my annual check-up; breezed through with flying colors.

Friday: NO SCHOOL tomorrow!! May go to the Wilderness Center for a long hike. Who knows? Daddy has the day off so we'll find out soon enough.

Ok, I'm insane

I don't know why I create "To-Do" lists like this one:

1. Move all frozen food from upright freezer to below-fridge freezer and coolers **DONE**
2. Defrost upright freezer **DONE
3. Prepare for huge mess created by thawing freezer **DONE**
4. Call ENT and try to get Nolan's hearing tested after repeated complaints from people. **DONE**
5. Put dishes away that were washed in the sink **DONE**
6. Wipe down all the potties **DONE**
7. Wash, dry, fold, and hang multiple loads of laundry **DONE**
8. Write check for Milk break Milk at school **DONE**
9. Sign Ozzie up for basketball **HALF WAY DONE**
10. Order Scholastic books online ** HALF WAY DONE**
11. Pre-order Schwans using our new and *ahem* "improved"...not... budget
12. Straighten bookshelf in the living room before I lose my mind **DONE**
13. Wipe down kitchen counters **DONE**
14. Swiffer kitchen floor **DONE**
15. Locate living room floor and vacuum it **DONE**
16. Take pictures of items to list on E-bay
17. List more books on Amazon store site **DONE**
18. Make shopping list and organize coupons for the monthly Wal-mart run on Saturday
19. Locate boys' bedroom floors and vacuum them
20. Make a game plan to tackle the play room... least favorite chore today **DONE**

And somewhere in there, I need to referee Aaron and Nolan.

I feel like I have to get it done *TODAY*... Why do I do this to myself??

Oink, Oink

We are now the proud parents of a Swine Flu case in our home. 3 yr old Aaron still had a temp yesterday of over 100 and he was really not himself (as in NOT playing, NOT moving). I took him in to the PA-C to rule out ear infection because I inherited my mother's paranoia about ear infections.

Sure enough, he not only had an ear infection but he also tested postitive for H1N1 or Swine flu. He's now on Tamiflu and Zythromax. He spent most of yesterday either on my lap or my father-in-love's lap downstairs. By last night, though, he began to drink Gatorade.

This morning, he's not interested in food but he's drinking and eating gummies (John Deere Gummies). He's perked up a little bit and is talking some more.

On the plus side, this strain of swine flu is mostly for adolescents so the grown-ups in our house shouldn't get it. Of course, there's always a chance but it's unlikely. If we get sick, it will more likely be the Seasonal Flu. The treatment's the same: rest, fluids, more rest, more fluids.

Aaron is not particularly "cuddly" anymore. He's a mover and shaker all the day long. When he's not feeling well, boy, he sure likes to cuddle. I know the time will come when he'll just hide in his room and yell "Leave me alone!" so I'm trying to appreciate these moments while I can.

Laundry Soap that works for us

Today I made another batch of laundry soap powder, with my ever-present helper, 3 yr old Aaron.

I grated 3 bars of soap (1 Fels Naptha, 1 Ivory, 1 Safeguard... not for any particular reason other than I was on a grating spree. I like Safeguard because it smells yummy and reminds me of a crazy fun summer back in the 80s LOL)

I mixed my grated soap with 1.5 cups of washing soda and 1.5 cups of borax.

When I do a load of laundry, I use 1 heaping tablespoon unless I have major oogies (mud, blood, vomit, etc) then I use 1.5 tablespoons and maybe a squirt of Dawn dish soap. For the rinse cycle, I use white vinegar (1/4 cup per load).

My little guys have bad skin normally but since I've switched to all homemade detergent, the eczema has cleared right up. My brother says it's probably the borax. I don't have any research to prove that but my kids' skin is clear. Works for me!

I should note that when I wash, I fill the laundry tub with hot water about 1/3 of the way and then I switch to warm (if I'm doing colors). The hot water boost helps the soap to dissolve (the Fels Naptha takes a long while to melt down; the other soaps dissolve easily).

Crowd Control and Joyful Chaos

I like to update my Facebook status with what's happening in our house. I always hope our antics bring a smile to someone's face or a feeling of "Oh good, I'm not the only one". My favorite reply was "Can I come live at your house? It sounds like a riot all the time!" You know? It truly is...

Yes they are loud. Yes they run in the house sometimes. Yes they make HUGE messes. Believe me, I know. They are noisy, messy, intelligent, empathetic BOYS. I really wouldn't want them any other way!

My boys are hilarious most of the time. They play really well together. They are imaginative and creative. These are good things. The "down" side is that it means they are... messy, loud, boisterous, BOYS. They make us (My DH and me) laugh until our sides ache. They make us so angry we could spit. We love them to pieces and melt to their "I love you's" daily. We will defend them, discipline them and train them. That is our goal.

The boys are not perfect angels but we don't desire that for growing men. Orneriness, while frustrating, means that when it's time to compromise a belief later on, it's NOT GONNA HAPPEN. Gotta keep our eyes on the prize... Strong-will now means NO giving up on convictions later!

I think I, personally, don't let the chaos bother me as much as it bothers other moms. I signed on for this job. Motherhood didn't just happen by accident for me. I CHOSE this path. God provided three delightful answers to prayer. So they're noisy; so they're messy; so our chaos is only marginally controlled at some points... God's plan is best. He gave our family three little men who are perfect matches for their Daddy and me.

* They are healthy
* They were loved and cared for in the womb
* They are smarter than average children by genetics
* They grow like weeds
* They have LOTS of interests and love to learn new things
* They can play anywhere and anytime, and occupy themselves
* They have big extended families who love them to pieces
* Their first mothers allow us to communicate with them and we LOVE IT.
* They are accepted at church, at school, at lessons
* They know how to behave in public... mostly LOL
* They know how to think of others feelings, needs and wants ... mostly
* They are blessed with grandparents in our home.
* My husband provides for us so I can stay home with the boys
* The boys have a very involved Daddy
* They have a Mommy with a crazy sense of humor who is old enough not to lose her mind over too many things... mostly... LOL

So yes, I'm bragging. My kids are pretty special. God gave us some very impressive blessing in our boys.

Remind me of this the next time we're stuck in the house with the flu...please?
